The little things that make a neighborhood feel like home. One of my favorite parts of what we do at Sip and Ship is watching the rhythms of the neighborhood change with the seasons. Summer has its own pace here: people linger over coffee a little longer, kids head off to camp with nervous excitement, and parents quietly start gathering things for college move-in day — even though they're not quite ready for summer to end. We have a front-row seat to all of it, and every day we're reminded that what comes through our doors isn't just coffee, gifts, or packages. It's connection. It's the little things we do for the people we care about. This month, we're celebrating a few of our favorite summer traditions. The other day, one of our longtime mailbox customers asked me why I still show up after twenty-four years of running Sip and Ship. I smiled and answered, "It's this. It's us." At the time, I didn't realize I was about to live that answer. More than twenty years ago, Cris walked through the front door of Sip and Ship as a customer. Over the years, somewhere between mailing packages and catching up on life, she became one of those familiar faces I always looked forward to seeing. Every so often, she'd tell me stories about her rescued Mustang, Jujube—JuJu, as she lovingly calls her. Each story made me a little more curious. I found myself wondering what this remarkable horse was like, and what it was about JuJu that made Cris's whole face light up whenever she spoke about her. For years, I quietly wondered what it would be like to meet her. Finally, I worked up the courage to ask. "Would you ever let me meet JuJu?" Cris smiled. "I'd love that." As we drove forty-five minutes north to a ranch in Snohomish, I realized I was learning more about Cris than I had in two decades of conversations across our counter. That's the funny thing about relationships. Sometimes they unfold in inches. Then one day, they surprise you. When we arrived, the world seemed to slow down. Two pigs greeted Cris like old friends, happily crunching fresh heads of lettuce she had brought for them. Goats wandered wherever they pleased. Horses grazed quietly across open fields surrounded by towering evergreens. There were fences, but they didn't feel confining. They felt more like gentle suggestions than barriers. Everything belonged exactly where it was. As we wandered the ranch, Cris shared what years of loving horses had taught her. I'd always thought of horses as creatures of the earth—grounded, steady, solid beneath our feet. She smiled. "I've come to believe they belong to the air." She told me about their ancestors, built to move with astonishing speed, and how throughout history horses have carried people into war, across continents, and through impossible journeys. She spoke about Roman armies that rode them into conquest, then about Native peoples who understood something much quieter—that a horse doesn't simply need room to roam. It needs to belong. That thought settled somewhere deep inside me. When Cris called across the field, "JuJu," the old Mustang lifted her head immediately. She knew exactly who was calling. I gently extended my hand and offered her carrots from my open palm. Her velvet-soft lips brushed my skin with surprising gentleness. Then I looked into her eyes. Deep brown. Smooth as river stones. Looking into them felt like looking into something bottomless. For just a moment, I imagined the younger mare she once was—wild and unbroken, running across open country, her mane lifting into the wind like wings. Standing beside her, I was struck by the beautiful contradiction she carried. She was enormous, yet impossibly gentle. Powerful, yet fragile. Strong enough to carry someone for miles, yet tender enough to receive kindness. The contrast took my breath away. I found myself sitting on the ground in front of her, simply looking up. Because in that moment... She held the sky. We brushed her coat together, rubbed ointment into the places that had grown tired with age, and talked to her the way you'd talk to an old friend. Later, Cris mixed JuJu's evening mash with the same care you'd prepare a meal for someone you love. Then something happened that I wasn't expecting. Without hesitation, JuJu stepped toward me and rested her face into the curve of my neck. Her whiskers tickled my skin. Her breath was warm and steady. She stayed there long enough for me to feel my shoulders soften. I've always believed animals know things about us before we know them ourselves. Maybe that's true. Maybe it isn't. What I know for certain is that, for one quiet moment, she trusted. That felt like such a gift. I drove home with the smell of that horse still on my hands. I didn't want to wash it away. On the drive home, I kept thinking about the mailbox customer who had asked me why I keep coming back after all these years. The answer wasn't just JuJu. It was everything that led to her. A relationship that began more than twenty years ago across our front counter. Small conversations that slowly became trust. Trust that became an invitation into a completely different part of someone's life. That's the part of this work no one tells you to expect. We think we're here to ship packages, pour coffee, rent mailboxes, or help someone find the perfect card. And we are. But if we're paying attention, something else happens. We earn the privilege of being invited into one another's lives. Sometimes that invitation looks like celebrating good news. Sometimes it means sitting with someone through a difficult season. And sometimes, if you're very lucky, it leads to a quiet ranch in Snohomish and a rescued Mustang named JuJu. So when people ask me what keeps me showing up after twenty-four years... It's this. New life is arriving too, with teammate Caroline and her partner Trevor welcoming baby Cooper into the world. When we shared that it was time to let go of our Ballard location—and began integrating our teams while navigating the realities that followed—it resonated far beyond what we imagined. Steve and I have been taking time to recalibrate, both personally and alongside our family and team, as we find the best ways to support this transition. Some changes were expected: more mailbox customers to serve, fuller days, new rhythms. Other parts were not. Bringing together strong teams of women comes with meaningful work—around role clarity, leadership, and shared expectations. Much of it has gone well. And it also reminded us that sometimes leadership isn’t about fixing something—it’s about grounding ourselves again in what service truly means. February often tells us that love looks one way. Roses. Reservations. Big gestures. But we know better. Love looks different for everyone. At Sip and Ship, we’re in a season that isn’t especially comfortable. We’re stretching, learning, celebrating our team (yes, even with a little Cirque du Soleil magic), and building thoughtful, sustainable business practices at a time when many small businesses are simply trying to stay afloat. There’s a lot of give and take. Tightening, then widening. Pausing. Adjusting. Watching closely. Letting the numbers speak—even when that feels counterintuitive to leading with people first. “Numbers don’t lie,” they say. And while that can sound cold, the truth is this: revenue allows us to make responsible decisions so we can continue to lead with dignity, honesty, and care—for our team and our community. One of my favorite movies, Love Actually, opens with a simple truth: “Love actually is all around.” If that’s true, then the real question becomes—what do we do with it? Sometimes love is practical. There’s a strange emotional dissonance in holding what’s happening in the world while also tending to the very practical needs of a small business. One moment I’m reading the news and feeling concern, grief, or uncertainty—and the next I’m thinking about birthday cards, coffee prices, mailbox services, labor costs, store hours, and revenue goals. The contrast can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels like I’m living in two different worlds at once. A lot of my thinking lately has centered on our team. We’re extending our coffee shop hours not just to serve customers, but to support the people who work here. We don’t want to lay anyone off. We’re actively looking for ways to keep our crew employed, engaged, and growing—even when that means reworking schedules, trying new ideas, or stretching ourselves a bit. That comes with pressure. Small businesses have revenue goals, too. And when you’re not sure you’ll hit them, the questions get heavier. What happens if we don’t? How do we stay sustainable while still taking care of people? How do we make thoughtful decisions when the margin for error feels thin? With Ballard now closed, we’re reimagining Greenwood. Bringing the bakery into the space. Finding ways to fit more into a smaller footprint without losing what matters most—quality, warmth, service, and the feeling that this is a place where people are seen and cared for. Sometimes that means wedging ourselves into tight corners and figuring it out as we go. I don’t have this perfectly balanced. I’m learning in real time. What I do know is that the work here—the showing up, the experimenting, the care—feels worth doing. The people here matter to me deeply, and that guides more decisions than any spreadsheet ever could. No big conclusions. Just a lot of care, a lot of thinking, and a steady effort to keep moving forward—together. P.S. As Ballard Sip and Ship comes to a close, we’re reflecting on what that space held. More than a storefront, it became a place of connection and community. We’re deeply grateful for all the moments shared there. And now, with clarity and optimism, we move forward—carrying what mattered most with us. The other day, a customer who first came to us navigating her new business left the store glowing with excitement. Watching her confidence grow, knowing we played even a small part, reminded me why we do what we do. We are equally moved when employees return season after season, stepping in with heart, skill, and a sense of shared purpose. Mira is a perfect example — she started with us at 16 during high school, returned as a seasonal team member while attending Western Washington University, and now comes back as she embarks on her career path. Her father, Todd — one of our first mailbox customers, who helped us navigate through difficult times — adds another layer to this full-circle moment. Mira has referred friends to join the team, learned countless aspects of the business, and now steps in with ease, grace, and a shimmer of the Emerald City, bringing hope, energy, and enthusiasm to everything she does. Our crew continues to amaze us in so many ways. Working alongside them is a daily joy — often wise beyond their years, bringing experiences from the world that enrich the way we collaborate. When Emma first applied for our bakery position a few years ago, we were in a period of transition—always a familiar rhythm in both business and life. Our previous baker was moving on to start a venture with her husband, and I was completely absorbed in the daily demands of running the shop. Into that whirlwind of change came Emma: determined, persistent, and full of curiosity. She had finished college and pursued a career in her field of study, but quickly realized it wasn’t the path for her. Undeterred, she discovered a new passion: baking. Over a few months, she emailed me a couple of times, gently reminding me she was still interested in the position. Her tenacity and willingness to follow her instincts—and try something entirely new—spoke volumes to me. Despite not having formal baking experience, we took a chance on her, and not a moment of that decision has been regretted. Emma’s journey to our kitchen is as unique as her treats. During college, she worked at the St. Louis Zoo in the bird section, caring for baby penguins. She learned all about how penguins greet each other—and besides her talent in the kitchen, she can literally speak penguin. It’s this combination of heart, curiosity, and attention to detail that she brings to every creation. Since joining Sip and Ship, Emma has mastered our classic favorites—banana bread, salted chocolate chip cookies, trail mix cookies, and peanut butter cookies—while introducing new delights that have quickly developed a devoted following. Highlights include her gluten-free walnut date bars, seasonal scones, pumpkin bread, and most recently, a cinnamon-laced coffee cake crowned with a buttery crumble, designed to pair perfectly with our medium roast drip coffee. Sweet, savory, and just a little caffeinated—this treat has already become the obsession of the week. Starting at the beginning of the year, Emma will be baking on location in our Greenwood café once we sunset the Ballard store, giving everyone a front-row seat to her magic. Every bite is handmade, small batch, and baked with love—a little taste of joy you can enjoy while sipping your coffee and tackling your day. From penguin whispers to perfect pastries, Emma’s journey reminds us that curiosity, tenacity, and heart make all the difference—not just in baking, but in life. The building will soon be redeveloped, and while we hoped to find a new home here in Ballard, we were unable to secure a suitable space. My grandmother, Dorthea, was one of them. As a little girl, I would watch in awe as she made clothes for my mom, Leah; my aunts, Jane and Kyttie; and even for neighbors in her community. I remember the way she measured, folded, and pinned with such precision, as if every seam mattered not just for the dress, but for the person who would wear it. The gentle clacking of her sewing machine created a steady, hypnotic rhythm that filled the room with a quiet magic. I would sit for hours just watching her hands guide fabric under the needle, letting the motion and sound transport me to another world where time slowed and everything felt possible. I didn’t care how long I had to wait for my turn; simply being there, immersed in the cadence of her controlled, deliberate movements, was enough. She was known as a skilled seamstress, but even more so for the quality of care she stitched into every piece. Seams were tight, hems straight, fabrics chosen with thought and intention. I would often outgrow her dresses before they ever wore out, yet I never outgrew the admiration and wonder I felt watching her work. Years later, I thought of her again when one of my favorite tops—one I’d bought in Rome several years ago—began to come apart. I had discovered it on a perfect day of sightseeing, in a small shop near the Spanish Steps. My boys, Joe, Jack, and George, were with me, licking gelato cones as we strolled the cobblestone streets. A small bell tinkled from a doorway, somehow inviting me in. I stepped inside and found one of the most beautiful tops I’d ever seen. Light, textured, and timeless. I’ve worn it every summer since. When it started to fray, I took it to a seamstress and paid far too much for what turned out to be a temporary fix. Within a month, it had unraveled again. And this time, something in me shifted. I realized I’d spent years admiring the patience and skill of others without ever giving myself permission to try. At 58, I decided it was time. I ordered a simple sewing kit and sat down with that top, determined to mend it myself. Not perfectly. Not even especially neatly. But I did it. And I’m glad I did. This is what mending looks like—not waiting for someone else to fix what matters to us, but choosing to try with our own two hands. Watching my grandmother, I realized that mending is also about connection. She wasn’t just sewing fabric—she was caring for the people who would wear her creations.
