When we shared that it was time to let go of our Ballard location—and began integrating our teams while navigating the realities that followed—it resonated far beyond what we imagined.

Steve and I have been taking time to recalibrate, both personally and alongside our family and team, as we find the best ways to support this transition. Some changes were expected: more mailbox customers to serve, fuller days, new rhythms. Other parts were not.

Bringing together strong teams of women comes with meaningful work—around role clarity, leadership, and shared expectations. Much of it has gone well. And it also reminded us that sometimes leadership isn’t about fixing something—it’s about grounding ourselves again in what service truly means.

February often tells us that love looks one way.

Roses. Reservations. Big gestures.

But we know better.

Love looks different for everyone.

At Sip and Ship, we’re in a season that isn’t especially comfortable. We’re stretching, learning, celebrating our team (yes, even with a little Cirque du Soleil magic), and building thoughtful, sustainable business practices at a time when many small businesses are simply trying to stay afloat.

There’s a lot of give and take.
Tightening, then widening.
Pausing. Adjusting. Watching closely.

Letting the numbers speak—even when that feels counterintuitive to leading with people first.

“Numbers don’t lie,” they say. And while that can sound cold, the truth is this: revenue allows us to make responsible decisions so we can continue to lead with dignity, honesty, and care—for our team and our community.

One of my favorite movies, Love Actually, opens with a simple truth:

“Love actually is all around.”

If that’s true, then the real question becomes—what do we do with it?

Sometimes love is practical.

Lately, being a small business owner feels complicated.

There’s a strange emotional dissonance in holding what’s happening in the world while also tending to the very practical needs of a small business. One moment I’m reading the news and feeling concern, grief, or uncertainty—and the next I’m thinking about birthday cards, coffee prices, mailbox services, labor costs, store hours, and revenue goals. The contrast can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels like I’m living in two different worlds at once.​

A lot of my thinking lately has centered on our team. We’re extending our coffee shop hours not just to serve customers, but to support the people who work here. We don’t want to lay anyone off. We’re actively looking for ways to keep our crew employed, engaged, and growing—even when that means reworking schedules, trying new ideas, or stretching ourselves a bit.

That comes with pressure. Small businesses have revenue goals, too. And when you’re not sure you’ll hit them, the questions get heavier. What happens if we don’t? How do we stay sustainable while still taking care of people? How do we make thoughtful decisions when the margin for error feels thin?

With Ballard now closed, we’re reimagining Greenwood. Bringing the bakery into the space. Finding ways to fit more into a smaller footprint without losing what matters most—quality, warmth, service, and the feeling that this is a place where people are seen and cared for. Sometimes that means wedging ourselves into tight corners and figuring it out as we go.

I don’t have this perfectly balanced. I’m learning in real time. What I do know is that the work here—the showing up, the experimenting, the care—feels worth doing. The people here matter to me deeply, and that guides more decisions than any spreadsheet ever could.

No big conclusions. Just a lot of care, a lot of thinking, and a steady effort to keep moving forward—together.

P.S. As part of that effort, we’ve extended our cafe hours OPEN 7am–4pm Monday–Friday, Saturdays 10am-4pm and now open Sundays from 10am–4pm.

As we step into a new year, I find myself doing something that feels both necessary and meaningful: placing 2025 gently in the rearview mirror.

As Ballard Sip and Ship comes to a close, we’re reflecting on what that space held. More than a storefront, it became a place of connection and community. We’re deeply grateful for all the moments shared there.

And now, with clarity and optimism, we move forward—carrying what mattered most with us.

What brings me real joy is knowing that our service doesn’t end—it continues, fully and intentionally, at Greenwood Sip and Ship. Same heart. Same standards. Same people.

If you haven’t visited Greenwood Sip and Ship yet, here’s what you can expect. You’ll walk into a space that feels welcoming and grounded, where friendly faces know your name—or are ready to learn it. Our entire team is moving with us, including our in-house baker, which means those one-of-a-kind pastries you’ve come to love are still very much part of the experience. You won’t find them anywhere else in Seattle.

As we enter this new year, I want to share something personal. Every year, I choose a single word to help guide how I show up—as a business owner, a leader, and a human being. This year, that word is alignment.

It shows up in how we adjust roles, support balanced schedules, and remain cohesive as a team—so our customers continue to feel cared for. Even in uncertainty, we’ve stayed grounded in the values that define Sip and Ship.

Maybe it’s the glow of the lights strung across our ceiling, the festive ambiance throughout the shop, or the sight of shelves filled with gifts that spark curiosity and joy. And then there’s our signature holiday tradition—the package train. Guests walk in with tote bags brimming with presents, set them down at our shipping counters, and watch the transformation begin. While they settle in with a delicious drink or treat, our team gets to work: unpacking, sorting, creating ship-to labels, holiday-wrapping, packing, and preparing everything to travel safely to their final destinations.

It’s one of our favorite parts of the season—equal to the team efficiency and creativity, it’s the connections. Last Saturday, Rachel arrived with her kindergarten son in tow. Midway through the process, she paused and shared, “You’re not like any other post office.” A little later, Robin emailed us her client list and brought in a bundle of holiday treats, exclaiming “Your team is amazing! You took so much stress away from me!” A moment after, one of our longtime mailbox customers, Ben, told us he can’t imagine going anywhere else to have his mail and packages delivered to. These sincere exchanges remind us why Sip and Ship exists: to ease the load, spark joy, and offer genuine care when it’s needed most.

That’s what sets Sip and Ship apart. Especially now. Especially here.

As the air turns crisp and the holidays approach, we find ourselves reflecting on the many ways gratitude shows up in our lives — not just during this season, but in the quiet, everyday moments that often mean the most.

Recently, our neighbors Maria and Scott brought over a delicious homemade soup. It was such a thoughtful gesture — warm, comforting, and filled with care. I loved it so much I decided to make it myself. Not because I’m an experienced cook (I’m definitely not!), but because I wanted to keep that feeling going. There was something about chopping the vegetables, stirring the pot, and tasting as it simmered that felt grounding. It reminded me how gratitude can be found in the simple act of slowing down and appreciating what connects us — a shared meal, a kind word, a thoughtful gesture.

That same sense of gratitude fills our days at Sip and Ship. Our team recently gathered for our annual holiday kickoff, preparing for the season ahead — planning and laughing together. It’s a time when our shared purpose shines most clearly: serving our community with heart and creating a space where kindness is exchanged as easily as a smile over coffee.

Whether it’s the familiar rhythm of wrapping a gift with care, the scent of freshly baked pumpkin loaf returning to the café, or the joyful hum of neighbors reconnecting in line — these moments remind us of what truly matters. Gratitude doesn’t wait for grand occasions; it’s tucked into the daily exchanges that make life meaningful.

Holiday Notes to Know

• Thanksgiving Closure: Both Sip and Ship locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after to give our team time to rest, recharge, and enjoy loved ones.
• Shipping Deadline: The last day to mail packages at regular rates is Tuesday, December 17. After that, expedited options may be needed to ensure on-time delivery.
• Seasonal Cheer: Our shops are already glowing with festive spirit! Stop by for cozy drinks, hand-curated gifts, and our signature wrapping — all designed to make your errands feel easeful and joyful.

A Birthday Celebration

On October 15, our official 23rd Sip and Ship birthday, we’ll be serving free 12-ounce lattes all day at both store locations from 8 AM until 3:30 PM. Come celebrate with us and raise a warm cup of coffee to toast this new season together.

I still remember the mornings Steve and I shared coffee at a 7-Eleven on our way into work, dreaming of a place we could call home — a place to put down roots, a place to build community, a place to raise a family. That simple dream has grown, day by day, into Sip and Ship, a little corner of Ballard where the quiet, cheerful ping of the door opening greets you, where neighbors know each other by name, where every package tells a story, and where connection — simple, human connection — is at the heart of everything we do.

Over the years, so many of you have left your mark — customers who trusted us with milestones, with joys, with the heavy moments too; employees who poured their hearts into every single day, through the busiest seasons and the quietest ones. The other day, a customer who first came to us navigating her new business left the store glowing with excitement. Watching her confidence grow, knowing we played even a small part, reminded me why we do what we do.

We are equally moved when employees return season after season, stepping in with heart, skill, and a sense of shared purpose. Mira is a perfect example — she started with us at 16 during high school, returned as a seasonal team member while attending Western Washington University, and now comes back as she embarks on her career path. Her father, Todd — one of our first mailbox customers, who helped us navigate through difficult times — adds another layer to this full-circle moment. Mira has referred friends to join the team, learned countless aspects of the business, and now steps in with ease, grace, and a shimmer of the Emerald City, bringing hope, energy, and enthusiasm to everything she does.

Our crew continues to amaze us in so many ways. Working alongside them is a daily joy — often wise beyond their years, bringing experiences from the world that enrich the way we collaborate. And when we see them out in the world carving their own paths, our hearts skip a beat. Knowing they too are forging their way with compassion, with conviction, with enthusiasm for all things imaginable — it excites us, it inspires us, it reminds us of the gift it is to be part of something larger than ourselves.
Over the years, we’ve had the joy of hiring not just employees, but also the children and friends of our customers. We’ve seen referrals come from people who have experienced our service firsthand. Those are the highest compliments of all — the candles on the cake of this 23-year celebration — because from the very beginning, and still today, service has been all we have ever known, and service has been all we have ever wanted to do. These connections, rooted in trust, in care, in respect, are what make every day meaningful.

As we celebrate 23 years, we feel so honored to have found this little corner of Ballard — a place to build something meaningful. Our customers, our crew, our friends, our neighbors — you mean the world to us. Through it all, our children — Joe, Jack, and George, the official CEOs of Sip and Ship — were often pulled into the rhythm of the business, whether they wanted to be or not. They sat through team meetings, did homework at our counters, ate as many pastries as they could stomach, sorted and packed boxes, lifted heavy packages, and greeted customers with kindness — even when they would have much rather been hanging out with friends or playing on their Xbox. They went with the flow, learning alongside us, carrying with them the lessons, the laughter, the memories that come from being part of something bigger than themselves. These are the seasons we love to host, the moments we treasure, and the community we are devoted to serving.

At Sip and Ship, every treat tells a story—and Emma, our head baker and café manager, has one of the sweetest stories of all.

When Emma first applied for our bakery position a few years ago, we were in a period of transition—always a familiar rhythm in both business and life. Our previous baker was moving on to start a venture with her husband, and I was completely absorbed in the daily demands of running the shop. Into that whirlwind of change came Emma: determined, persistent, and full of curiosity.

She had finished college and pursued a career in her field of study, but quickly realized it wasn’t the path for her. Undeterred, she discovered a new passion: baking. Over a few months, she emailed me a couple of times, gently reminding me she was still interested in the position. Her tenacity and willingness to follow her instincts—and try something entirely new—spoke volumes to me. Despite not having formal baking experience, we took a chance on her, and not a moment of that decision has been regretted.

Emma’s journey to our kitchen is as unique as her treats. During college, she worked at the St. Louis Zoo in the bird section, caring for baby penguins. She learned all about how penguins greet each other—and besides her talent in the kitchen, she can literally speak penguin. It’s this combination of heart, curiosity, and attention to detail that she brings to every creation.

Since joining Sip and Ship, Emma has mastered our classic favorites—banana bread, salted chocolate chip cookies, trail mix cookies, and peanut butter cookies—while introducing new delights that have quickly developed a devoted following. Highlights include her gluten-free walnut date bars, seasonal scones, pumpkin bread, and most recently, a cinnamon-laced coffee cake crowned with a buttery crumble, designed to pair perfectly with our medium roast drip coffee. Sweet, savory, and just a little caffeinated—this treat has already become the obsession of the week.

Starting at the beginning of the year, Emma will be baking on location in our Greenwood café once we sunset the Ballard store, giving everyone a front-row seat to her magic. Every bite is handmade, small batch, and baked with love—a little taste of joy you can enjoy while sipping your coffee and tackling your day.

From penguin whispers to perfect pastries, Emma’s journey reminds us that curiosity, tenacity, and heart make all the difference—not just in baking, but in life.

After 23 wonderful years of proudly serving the Ballard community, we will be closing the doors of Ballard Sip and Ship on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025.

The building will soon be redeveloped, and while we hoped to find a new home here in Ballard, we were unable to secure a suitable space.

While this chapter is bittersweet, our story isn’t ending—it’s simply turning the page. We warmly invite you, our cherished customers, to continue with us at Greenwood Sip and Ship, where our doors remain wide open. There, you’ll still find the same coffee, connection, shipping solutions, and community spirit you’ve come to know and trust.

From my grandmother’s sewing machine to every interaction at Sip and Ship, care is in the details we choose to honor and carry forward.
At Sip and Ship, quality care has always been our guiding thread. It’s what my husband Steve and I hoped to weave into every part of our family business when we first opened the doors—and what our team continues to carry forward today.

That sense of care didn’t come out of nowhere. It was taught to me long before I ever realized it.
I don’t know how to sew—not really. But I’ve always admired people who do.

My grandmother, Dorthea, was one of them. As a little girl, I would watch in awe as she made clothes for my mom, Leah; my aunts, Jane and Kyttie; and even for neighbors in her community. I remember the way she measured, folded, and pinned with such precision, as if every seam mattered not just for the dress, but for the person who would wear it. The gentle clacking of her sewing machine created a steady, hypnotic rhythm that filled the room with a quiet magic. I would sit for hours just watching her hands guide fabric under the needle, letting the motion and sound transport me to another world where time slowed and everything felt possible. I didn’t care how long I had to wait for my turn; simply being there, immersed in the cadence of her controlled, deliberate movements, was enough. She was known as a skilled seamstress, but even more so for the quality of care she stitched into every piece. Seams were tight, hems straight, fabrics chosen with thought and intention. I would often outgrow her dresses before they ever wore out, yet I never outgrew the admiration and wonder I felt watching her work.

Years later, I thought of her again when one of my favorite tops—one I’d bought in Rome several years ago—began to come apart. I had discovered it on a perfect day of sightseeing, in a small shop near the Spanish Steps. My boys, Joe, Jack, and George, were with me, licking gelato cones as we strolled the cobblestone streets. A small bell tinkled from a doorway, somehow inviting me in. I stepped inside and found one of the most beautiful tops I’d ever seen. Light, textured, and timeless. I’ve worn it every summer since.

When it started to fray, I took it to a seamstress and paid far too much for what turned out to be a temporary fix. Within a month, it had unraveled again. And this time, something in me shifted.
I realized I’d spent years admiring the patience and skill of others without ever giving myself permission to try. At 58, I decided it was time. I ordered a simple sewing kit and sat down with that top, determined to mend it myself.

Not perfectly. Not even especially neatly. But I did it. And I’m glad I did.

This is what mending looks like—not waiting for someone else to fix what matters to us, but choosing to try with our own two hands. Watching my grandmother, I realized that mending is also about connection. She wasn’t just sewing fabric—she was caring for the people who would wear her creations. Every precise seam, every thoughtful stitch, was a way of showing attention, respect, and love.

At Sip and Ship, we approach every interaction the same way. True quality of care comes from connecting with our guests—listening closely to what they need, understanding the details that matter most, and taking intentional steps to ensure the desired outcome is met. Whether it’s starting your day with a warm cup of coffee lightly sprinkled with cinnamon, carefully wrapping a gift for your mom to take to her favorite dinner spot in Ballard at Ray’s Boathouse, packing and shipping family heirlooms across the country so a loved one can move to New York to pursue their dreams, or sending a college student their first care package filled with forgotten chargers, a favorite sweatshirt, essential posters and sneakers, and a few surprise treats from home—each small touch is a way to show that someone is thought of and loved. Each gesture is a stitch, holding together a relationship, a memory, and a moment of care.

I’ll never forget the first letter I received from my grandfather, Paw Paw. I was ten or eleven—living away from my parents, separated by both distance and circumstance. My world then was uncertain, and comfort was hard to come by. But one day, a letter arrived.

Typed on a manual typewriter, sealed in a worn envelope, and quietly waiting for me, his letter held a kind of weight beyond paper. Each keystroke was a testament to his effort—made harder by the ALS that had taken his mobility and voice. Mistakes covered in white-out marked the page like constellations. Imperfect, yes—but beautiful in their honesty.

That letter reminded me I wasn’t alone. That even across distance and silence, I was held in someone’s heart. It wasn’t long or elaborate. But it was enough. And I’ve carried its message with me ever since.

Climb for the Grieving Kids | July 10–12
We are incredibly proud of Stella Vogel—Sip and Ship barista and founder of the nonprofit Angel Bear—who will be attempting to summit Mount Rainier, the tallest peak in Washington State at 14,411 feet. Her journey is more than a climb; it’s a tribute and a mission. Stella founded Angel Bear in honor of her father, whom she lost at a very young age. This climb—called Climb for Comfort—is an extension of her heartfelt work helping grieving children find comfort and community.

Phinneywood Summer ArtWalk | July 18, 6–9 PM at Greenwood Sip and Ship
Mark your calendar for this year’s ArtWalk—moved up a bit earlier in the month and packed with wonder. We’re thrilled to host artist Jorge Caines, whose mixed media sculptures blend the extraordinary with the everyday. Think meteorites, woolly mammoth fur, and Roman coins, paired with dried flowers, paperclips, and spices—all unified through ceramic, concrete, wire, and imagination.

Growing up on the Marshall Islands, I spent countless daylight hours beachcombing—gathering driftwood, sea glass, bottle caps, and shells to craft tiny homes in the sand. What began as play became a practice: of noticing, choosing, and assembling with care. That quiet curation of scattered pieces is a thread that’s followed me into adulthood—and is now deeply woven into how we curate Sip and Ship. Jorge’s work rekindles that same sense of wonder. His pieces ask us to look closer, feel more, and see beauty in both the ancient and the everyday.

With Certified Return Receipt Service, we’ll ensure your taxes arrive safely and on time—because the last thing you want to worry about is missing a deadline. The deadline for filing is April 15th, so don’t wait!

Sweet Treats Await

As a little thank you for trusting us with your important mail, we’ve got a reward waiting for you! Every time you mail your taxes, enjoy one of our small-batch, homemade walnut-date bars, blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, or a slice of banana bread. We’re pretty sure these will make tax season a little sweeter.

Pouring candles has been a form of healing for Linda, and she believes that scent has the power to soothe, refresh, and even heal.

In 2021, Linda opened a store in Seattle’s U-District, where she pours candles daily, teaches workshops, and offers candle refills. Her mission is to bring the outdoors in and create experiences that promote renewal and well-being. Her shower steamers and Northwest scented candles are year-round staples at Sip and Ship, excellent any-occassion gifts and care package toppers!


2. Ginger P. Designs
Gina’s love for stationery began long before she launched Ginger P. Designs. As a child, while most kids bolted to the toy section, Gina was drawn to the school supplies aisle, mesmerized by the colors and patterns of notebooks, pencils, and cards. That passion has never wavered. After creating her own wedding invitations in 2010, Gina gained the confidence to start designing paper products professionally, and Ginger P. Designs was born.

Her cards are the perfect blend of vibrant design and heartfelt expression. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or a “just because” moment, Ginger P. Designs offers cards capture the essence of every occasion with thoughtfulness and creativity.


3. Carolyn Suzuki Goods
