Women In History & Women Making History: Part 4 of 4

In our final segment of Women In History & Women Making History brings us to a member of Sip and Ship that truly brings cross-dimensional talent to our team, Kat Schulthies. Kat started out with us as a mailbox customer and on a whim applied for a barista position. Little did we know that four years later, while welcoming challenges in various roles throughout our organization, naturally, she would become our first Madame General Manager. Kat operates from the mindset that her work is not a sprint. Creating and building takes great patience, collaboration and hard work - and if you want to go far, we must go together - especially the heavy lifting required to move a team, small business and community through unexpected change and safely through a global pandemic.

When asked where Kat finds her inspiration, she introduced us to Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher. An American culinary writer who essentially created the food memoir genre. Her style of writing about food and cooking was so unheard of for a woman, that many people thought she was a man. Her dedication to showcasing all the intricacies and intersections of food, life, and love, whether mundane or gourmet inspires Kat to continue using food as a means to connect with and understand my friends, family, and community.

"First we eat, then we do everything else." - Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher

Kat’s true love is baking and creating beautiful cakes! She sees to it that our Sip and Ship cafes are well appointed with quality and delicious food everyday. On a personal note, I will never forget the incredbile mermaid-themed cake she made for my 50th birthday! When Kat’s not cooking up deliciousness; she enjoys spending time with her cat Littlefoot, exploring the outdoors with her partner Tyler, and celebrating Halloween with friends.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating Kat on her four year work anniversary with Sip and Ship and the women throughout history who fought for what they believed in and cared about. Carving their way through resistance to stir our consciousness and inspire our actions today.

We hope you agree these Women In History segments have not only been informative but fascinating how they relate to women who are in the process of making history.

One of our rising stars at Sip and Ship is Jordyn Bradshaw. She joined our team two years ago when the Space Needle closed for renovations. With a love for coffee, she graced our barista team and brought with her a strong work ethic and drive for serving quality coffee and delivering out-of-this-world customer service.

It came as no surprise that one of Jordyn’s most influential women in history is Maria Mitchell, the first female astronomer in the 19th-century. She was also the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the first American scientist to discover a comet in 1847. Mitchell and her father did astronomical observations together as she grew up.  "At age 12, Maria helped her father calculate the position of their home by observing a solar eclipse. By 14, sailors trusted her to do vital navigational computations for their long whaling journeys," wrote the Maria Mitchell Association.  By the age of 16 she had begun a school for girls and taught them science and math, empowering them by giving them an education they wouldn't have received otherwise. She was a fierce feminist, often boldly defied social conventions and helped pave the way for women to make their voices heard among scientific communities.

Like Maria, from a very young age, Jordyn’s favorite subjects in school were math, science, and astronomy. Everything she’s learned and will continue to learn about these subjects is deeply influenced by Maria's insistence upon the need for women in science. Growing up on a farm in Central Washington, Jordyn knows how to work hard and also has a deep affection for animals. She has two of her own fur babies, Moxxie and Runa, who she shares with her partner Erik.

As a member of our leadership team, Jordyn sees potential in everyone. She has an uncanny ability to view challenges as opportunities to explore the unknown - seeking to learn, understand and expand her knowledge - contributing to our collective progress and future success at Sip and Ship.

Please come say hello and join us in celebrating Jordyn’s two year Sip and Ship work anniversary! We value her unyielding commitment to doing good work within the communities we serve together everyday.

Part of the ripple effect Sip and Ship in our work and within our community is supporting and shaping emerging adults and women to do great work to becoming great leaders. Empowering young women like Amanda Louie to lead with courage, hard work, authenticity and gratitude.

Two years ago, Amanda joined our team as a barista while pursuing a medical degree at the University of Washington. She quickly stood-out and established herself as a leader, and was eventually promoted into a leadership role as assistant store manager of Ballard Sip and Ship, which she excels in today. The moment Amanda steps through our doors, she demonstrates hard work, discipline and dedication to support others, elevate our team and work culture, aiming for collective success. She has a centering effect in the store and those around her.

When asked who inspires her, Amanda quickly shares the name of Elizabeth Blackwell. The first woman in the U.S. to receive a medical degree. Her determination and perseverance in fighting for the rights of women in medicine has inspired me to continue to do the same - to advocate for the equality of women in all aspects of life and to challenge the social norms, taking risks to cross social barriers.

If you’ve ever met Amanda, you quickly learn that she is naturally ambitious. She walks the talk as seen here supporting her co-manager Carrie at the Greenwood Sip and Ship. In her free time, Amanda enjoys spending time with her two dogs Bella and Teddy, being outdoors with her new camera (her Seattle skyline shot) and listening to music with her boyfriend Ben, who is also a musician. Post-pandemic she’s looking forward to hanging out with her friends again and discovering new weekend getaways throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Please join us in congratulating Amanda on her two-year work anniversary at Sip and Ship! We couldn’t be more proud to work alongside this extraordinary teammate and female leader.

You’re invited to stop to say hello to Amanda and team at Ballard Sip and Ship this week as we honor women throughout history who came before us and inspire us today!

It is no secret that Sip and Ship is female owned, family oriented and community minded. Which is why we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate Women’s History Month with all of you!

Beginning today and every Monday this month, Sip and Ship will proudly present members of our own female leadership team. Giving you a chance to get to know these women and a woman in history that has inspired them and shapes their leadership style.

We have come to trust these four women over the years. As you will learn, and hopefully experience the next time you visit Sip and Ship, each of these women are truly exceptional. They possess the courage to lead, work hard to promote authenticity within our work culture and value teamwork as a bi-product of gratitude - always grateful for challenges that often serve as lessons in disguise and make us stronger, together.

This week, we are thrilled to introduce to you our assistant store manager at Greenwood Sip and Ship, Carrie White.

Carrie has worked her way up from an entry level position to her current role and we believe her potential is endless - the sky’s the limit! Carrie works with great purpose and passion. She loves to read and write poetry, care for her five fur-baby-ferrets and journey through life with her charming best friend and husband, Emilio.

Carrie’s team appreciates her thoughtfulness, bubbly personality and reliably positive support. When asked, a woman in history who keeps her focussed and motivated is “Ethel Blanche Hairston, whose ring name was Ethel Johnson. She was the first African American woman professional wrestler at just 16 years of age. She lived her life with passion, courage and determination. Giving her all every day no matter the circumstances in 1950’s America. Every day I am reminded to find passion in all that I do, and remember that courage is a choice one has to make on their own.”

We’d love to hear what woman in history has influenced you? Come say hello to Carrie and our team at Greenwood Sip and Ship this week to honor this fierce female leader, team and the women throughout history who came before us.
